ADCENG Gas Equipment, South Africa’s largest gas equipment and solution provider, has taken energy saving into a new realm by combining gas water heaters with solar water heating panels.

“Gas water heaters are in themselves extremely frugal but when combined with solar water heating panels, energy savings are huge,” says the Appliance Brand Manager

Two solar compatible water heaters, the Fagor Solasis 15 and 11 litre models are available from ADCENG, both of them specifically designed to link up with solar water heating systems.

The panels are available from Energy Efficient Options, a Cape Town-based company which has been contracted by the National Parks Board to install several gas/solar systems at various resorts countrywide.

“The Solasis gas water heaters are used as a back-up for the solar installation. Water is fed from the solar panels into the heaters where it is either mixed with cold water to achieve the desired temperature, or, if the water in the solar panels is not sufficiently hot, the geyser is automatically ignited, heating the water to the desired temperature.

“Both the Solasis models come with electronic battery ignition and don’t require mains power supply. And because there is no pilot light these models are even more energy efficient than conventional models.

“South Africa’s sun-filled climate is ideally suited to solar heating. Not only is it much cheaper but it is eco-friendly, conserving fossil fuel and making for a cleaner atmosphere. With demand for electricity fast approaching peak generating capacity the solar/gas water heating solution will become increasingly attractive.”

Both models have the following features:

• Brass hydraulic valve.
• Stainless steel universal burner.
• Electrolytic copper heat exchanger coated in aluminium paint.
• Ionisation safety.
• Electronic battery-powered ignition.
• Hydraulic control.
• LCD display.
• Automatic water flow adjuster.
• Water inlet filter.
• Gas inlet filter.
• Water shortage safety mechanism.
• Vertical outlet non-return draught diverter.

Fagor gas water heaters come in two variants, those that burn LP gas and those that run on natural gas. Both are available from ADCENG Gas Equipment.

Solasis Water Heating Schematic
A schematic of a Fagor Solasis solar/gas water heating system, which in this instance, uses a heat exchanger for maximum efficiency. Water heated in the solar panels is circulated to the heat exchanger where it transfers heat to a separate flow system which circulates water between the heat exchanger and the storage tank. When hot water is required it is drawn off the storage tank and fed through the gas water heater which adjusts the water to the desired temperature by either adding cold water, or, if there has been insufficient solar energy, by heating the water with the gas burners.
